A water soluble stabilizer is the best stabilizer to use with the
serger. A stabilizer is stitched into the serged seam and will remain there unless
you use the water soluble type. On bias edges, on a single layer of fabric, or wherever
a little more control is needed the water-soluble stabilizer can be a great help.
1. Cut a 1" wide strip of stabilizer.
2. Place the stabilizer under the foot with the edge of the strip
butted up to the cutting blade.
3. Serge onto the stabilizer trimming about 1/4" of the stabilizer
off as you serge.
4. Place the fabric under the front edge of the foot and continue
to stitch through the fabric and stabilizer. Make sure you can see the stabilizer
at all times because it may shift under the fabric as you serge.
5. After the stitching is completed, trim the excess stabilizer
off from the back of the fabric near the needle thread. The remainder will disappear
the first time the garment is laundered.
Note: This technique will also give better
stitch quality on difficult fabrics and when using some temperamental decorative
threads.
