"Transition in Silk" by Linda Lee Vivian

Linda Lee Vivian credits one of her patterns ìAround the Blockî for the inspiration for this garment. The top and skirt are pieced together with the aid of the serger. Linda loves to create ìnewî fabric with the aid of the serger. After the fabric is created she cuts the garment from this ìnewî patchwork fabric. For this garment she chose silk fabrics and a touch of lace overlays. Some of the silks were hand dyed to create a subtle blend of cream, ivory, and ecru. She used over 75 yds. of fine cotton laces, entredeux, swiss embroideries, and insertions from Capitol Imports as part of the patchwork. All of the decorative serging is stitched with silk threads from YLI. Their silk ribbon is also used for the ribbon embellishments. Laces and silk are decoratively pieced together using a variety of stitches such as a narrow 2 thread flatlock, and a wide 2 thread flatlock. Inside seams were serged with a 4 thread stitch. Additional silk ribbon embellishments were added to the top for an elegant touch. 4mm silk ribbon was woven into the ladder stitch of the wide 2 thread flatlock and some of the laces. For the skirt Linda decoratively serged all the strips together and used this ìnewî fabric to cut the gores of the skirt from. The gores were cut at an angle to continue the bias effect seen in the top. Silk fabrics have such a wonderful drape and make this entire garment a very special treat to wear. Linda chose to accent the garment with an antique mesh bag from her collection. And please notice the leather and tapestry boots that add that final touch to this very elegant garment.
